LIMBAH RUMAH TANGGA

Limbah merupakan bahan sisa yang dihasilkan dari suatu kegiatan dan proses produksi, baik pada skala rumah tangga, industri, pertambangan, dan sebagainya. Bentuk limbah dapat berupa gas dan debu, cair atau padat. Di antara berbagai jenis limbah, ada yang bersifat beracun atau berbahaya dan dikenal sebagai limbah Bahan Berbahaya dan Beracun (Limbah B3).
Limbah beracun terdiri dari:
  1. Limbah mudah meledak adalah limbah yang melalui reaksi kimia dapat menghasilkan gas dengan suhu dan tekanan tinggi yang dengan cepat dapat merusak lingkungan.
  2. Limbah mudah terbakar adalah limbah yang apabila berdekatan dengan api, percikan api, gesekan atau sumber nyala lain akan mudah menyala atau terbakar dan apabila telah menyala akan terus terbakar hebat dalam waktu lama.
  3. Limbah reaktif adalah limbah yang menyebabkan kebakaran karena melepaskan atau menerima oksigen atau limbah organik peroksida yang tidak stabil dalam suhu tinggi.
  4. Limbah beracun adalah limbah yang mengandung racun berbahaya bagi manusia dan lingkungan. Limbah B3 dapat menimbulkan kematian atau sakit bila masuk ke dalam tubuh melalui pernapasan, kulit, atau mulut.
  5. Limbah yang menyebabkan infeksi adalah limbah laboratorium yang terinfeksi penyakit atau limbah yang mengandung kuman penyakit, seperti bagian tubuh manusia yang diamputasi dan cairan tubuh manusia yang terkena infeksi.
 Aktivitas sehari-hari yang kita lakukan seperti mandi, mencuci, dan berbagai aktivitas lain yang kita anggap sepele namun menghasilkan sisa buangan, ternyata dapat membahayakan bagi manusia dan lingkungan khususnya lingkungan laut. Dari sekian banyak aktivitas manusia ternyata yang paling berbahaya adalah limbah rumah tangga. Walaupun kita tidak hidup di wilayah pesisir dan banyak limbah industri yang tidak diolah juga dapat membahayakan perairan laut, tetapi melihat banyaknya penduduk Indonesia dengan limbah rumah tangga yang tidak diolah serta dihasilkan setiap hari. Dapat dikatakan kerusakan karena limbah rumah tangga lebih besar daripada limbah industri.
Limbah rumah tangga yang dirasa sangat berbahaya bagi lingkungan antara lain limbah bahan kimia baik dari MCK, emisi gas CO2 maupun aktivitas lain dan sampah plastik. Limbah plastik merupakan salah satu musuh besar yang banyak diperangi oleh berbagai pihak yang peduli terhadap lingkungan. Secara umum ada tiga jenis input utama limbah rumah tangga ke laut yaitu langsung pembuangan limbah ke laut, air hujan, dan polutan yang dilepaskan dari atmosfer.
Berikut adalah dampak negatif dari limbah rumah tangga yang masuk ke dalam lingkungan laut:
  1. Eutrofikasi, penyebab terbesar adalah sungai yang bermuara di laut, limbah yang terbawa salah satunya adalah  bahan kimia yang digunakan sebagai pupuk dalam pertanian maupun limbah dari peternakan dan manusia.  Salah satu yang paling sering ditemukan adalah detergen. Eutrofikasi adalah perairan menjadi terlalu subur sehingga terjadi ledakan jumlah alga dan fitoplankton yang saling berebut mendapat cahaya untuk fotosintesis. Karena terlalu banyak maka alga dan fitoplankton di bagian bawah akan mengalami kematian secara massal,  serta terjadi kompetisi dalam mengonsumsi O2 karena terlalu banyak organisme pada tempat tersebut. Sisa respirasi menghasilkan banyak CO2 sehingga kondisi perairan menjadi anoxic dan menyebabkan kematian massal pada hewan-hewan di perairan tersebut.
  2. Peningkatan emisi CO2 akibat dari banyaknya kendaraan, penggunaan listrik berlebihan, serta buangan industri akan memberi efek peningkatan kadar keasaman laut. Peningkatan CO2 tentu akan berakibat buruk bagi manusia terkait dengan kesehatan pernafasan. Salah satu fungsi laut adalah sebagai penyerap dan penetral CO2 terbesar di bumi. Saat CO2 di atmosfir meningkat maka laut juga akan menyerap lebih banyak CO2 yang mengakibatkan meningkatnya derajat keasaman laut. Hal ini mempengaruhi kemampuan karang dan hewan bercangkang lainnya untuk membentuk cangkang. Jika hal ini berlangsung secara terus menerus maka hewan-hewan tersebut akan punah dalam jangka waktu dekat.
  3. Plastik, yang menjadi masalah terbesar dan paling berbahaya. Banyak hewan yang hidup pada atau di laut mengonsumsi plastik karena tak jarang plastik yang terdapat di laut akan tampak seperti makanan bagi hewan laut. Plastik tidak dapat dicerna dan akan terus berada pada organ pencernaan hewan ini,  sehingga menyumbat saluran pencernaan dan menyebabkan kematian melalui kelaparan atau infeksi. Plastik terakumulasi karena mereka tidak mudah terurai, mereka akan photodegrade (terurai oleh cahaya matahari) pada paparan sinar matahari, tetapi  hanya dapat terjadi dalam kondisi kering. Sedangkan dalam air plastik hanya akan terpecah menjadi potongan-potongan yang lebih kecil, namun tetap polimer, bahkan sampai ke tingkat molekuler. Ketika partikel-partikel plastik mengambang hingga seukuran zooplankton dan dikonsumsi oleh hewan lain yang lebih besar, dengan cara inilah plastik masuk ke dalam  rantai makanan. Banyak dari potongan plastik ini berakhir di perut burung-burung laut dan hewan laut lain termasuk penyu. Bahan beracun yang digunakan dalam pembuatan bahan plastik dapat terurai dan masuk ke lingkungan ketika terkena air. Racun ini bersifat hidrofobik (berikatan dengan air) dan menyebar di permukaan laut. Dengan demikian plastik jauh lebih mematikan di laut daripada di darat. Kontaminan hidrofobik juga dapat terakumulasi pada jaringan lemak, sehingga racun plastik diketahui mengganggu sistem endokrin ketika dikonsumsi, serta dapat menekan sistem kekebalan tubuh atau menurunkan tingkat reproduksi. 

Upaya-upaya mudah yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengurangi pengaruh limbah rumah tangga bagi lingkungan antara lain: menggunakan produk-produk ramah lingkungan dan mengurangi sampah plastik dengan 3 R/3 M Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (Mengurangi, Menggunakan kembali, Mendaur ulang).
